Authorities respond to the Victor Cullen Center after a fight broke out among juveniles at about 7:45 p.m. Wednesday. About a dozen juveniles escaped the facility, Maryland State Police Cpl. Vinson Smith said.
SABILLASVILLE -- A fight broke out among juveniles at the Victor Cullen Center about 7:45 p.m. Wednesday and 14 left their cottages only to be captured a short time later, according to Maryland State Police and a Department of Juvenile Services spokeswoman.

By 8:45 p.m., all were in back in custody, Spokeswoman Tammy Brown said. Seven people were injured.

The juveniles left their cottages, Brown said. Ten were found almost immediately in a maintenance building; four others were found less than a quarter mile away. Six staff members and one resident suffered minor injuries and were taken to a hospital.

Brown said she did not know how the escape occurred, and that the events leading up to the escape were under investigation.

Nearly a year ago, two teens were captured within days of escaping from the center.

On June 16, 2008, a 16-year-old and a 14-year-old escaped after assaulting a staff member and scaling a razor wire fence surrounding the facility.

The 14-year-old was captured two days later in Prince George's County. The 16-year-old was captured June 20 in Baltimore.

The juvenile detention center reopened in July 2007 after being closed for more than five years. It has a capacity of 48 boys.

Before it closed in 2002 amid allegations of abuse, the state-owned, privately maintained campus housed more than 200 juvenile offenders.

At the time of the reopening, a state spokeswoman said security was improved at the center with the addition of a no-climb mesh security fence and camera and alarm systems. If an offender escapes, area residents are to receive an automated phone call alerting them.

247 day care center. Maybe they need to hire more qualified staff?

I'm sure they are all "good boys". They always are. Just ask their mothers.

lucky for us most kids that age are still stupid and predictable. I am glad they were dragged back for a longer sentance..sux to be them...I hope the center works on these issues, we don't need them more messed up in the head then when they got there.

I'm imagining what happens after they close Guantanamo, and..... I'm imagining a bunch of guys locked up in a Supermax facility for the rest of their lives. THE HORROR!

Most republicans say the Gitmo terrorists and the wrongly detained are to dangerous to be brought to American Supermax prisons because they have superpowers.

Is there not a razor wire fence around this facility? If you are going to house a large number of screwups and morons in one spot, you need to wrap it with a prison fence. It would help them "get the feel" of what a real prison is like and convince them to change their ways. They are KIDS. Use this to your advantage while you still have an advantage.

Kudos to the Frederick Troopers, Thurmont City Officers, Fred Co Deputies, Fred City officers as well as the L.E. Officers from Pa who brought this situation under control swiftly and safely. A job well done!

Injured several staff? So a mini riot type atmosphere. Thats ok though they are caught and the perps eventually will sleep again. lol

What is a "mesh" fence? This sounds like something you could sleep on. Add some electricity so the neighbors can sleep at night.

Remind these kids that there are bears and coyotes in those mountains. The urban kids will never leave the gates, out of fear of the unknown wilderness.

yeah as a resident of this area it was real comforting after the fact to get an automated phone call @ 9:15pm alerting us that "several"when in actuallity it was 14 juviniles had escaped. When it occurred @ 7:45pm. This is why the residents of Sabillasville Protested this facility. Nothing like letting us know after the fact!!

The cops definately handled the situation well. I was driving up 15N last night and saw 6 State Trooper and Sherifs cars speed by doing at least 100mph to get up there to handle the incident.

When word came that the State was going to re-open VCA, I was willing to let the State try and see if they could do better than the last contractor did (YSI/CSC). Oops - guess not. Just more of the same-old, same-old "stuff." VCA has a lot of explaining to do in the coming days & weeks.

I love the fact that Tammy Brown used the word "minor" injuries to staff. Do you consider being knocked to the ground, punched and kicked severly by 14 boys minor?? I don't think so. Someone needs to speak the truth and let people know what REALLY happened. Those 3 staff members from Savage were sent to VC to help enforce rules and regulations and what do they get in return? A trip to the hospital, bruises, stitches, and a memory that will haunt them for the rest of their lives. I only hope the whole truth gets out and the Victor Cullen Center gets shut down for good!! If they would have let things alone and left people where they were this would have never of happened. I sure hope justice will be served on all 14 of these out of control brats!
